Three decades of service and 15 years with identity checks.

Identity Checking is owned and led by Tony Byng, a developer since 1987. Tony started out writing database systems as a teenager, went on to work on everything from mailshot management to financial data, and founded Mobunti in 1994. Since then we've built data and software systems for businesses of all kinds.

In 1998 we built a company formations system that connects directly to Companies House, and for nearly 25 years we formed tens of thousands of companies for accountants across the UK. When the Money Laundering Regulations 2007 came into force (since replaced by the Money Laundering Regulations 2017), company formation agents like us had to verify the identity of the people we formed companies for. So in 2011 we integrated with a couple of identity checking providers, at first just for our own use. Then our customers started asking to use it too. Tens of thousands of ID checks later, we're still going strong.

Identity Checking is that same service, now open to any regulated UK business on pay-as-you-go terms. We went the other way from an industry built on contracts, big minimum spends and integration fees: a free account, pay only for the checks you run, and an API that costs nothing extra to connect. Every check uses data from approved identity verification providers, and we're a small team, so you know exactly who you're dealing with.
